Teeth straightening

Thinking about straightening your teeth but feeling overwhelmed by all the options? You’re not alone. With so many teeth straightening systems available, it can be tricky to know which one is right for you.

Here at College Dental Surgeries, we use clear aligners to help our patients achieve the smile they’ve always wanted. Clear aligners use a series of removable aligners that gradually and gently move your teeth into their ideal position.

In this month’s blog, the team at College Dental Surgeries is taking the mystery out of clear aligners by sharing five important things you should know before starting treatment.

AlignersYou’ll Need to Wear Your Aligners Most of the Day

To get the best possible results, commitment is key. Your clear aligners need to be worn for at least 17–22 hours a day. Ideally, they should only be removed when you’re eating, drinking anything other than water, or cleaning your teeth.

Wearing your clear aligners as instructed ensures your teeth move in the planned way. If they’re left out too often, your teeth can begin to move back, which may increase treatment time and affect the final result.

DiscomfortSome Discomfort Is Normal at First

When you first start wearing your clear aligners, they may feel a little strange – but this is completely normal, and most people adapt very quickly. You might also notice a slight change in your speech at the beginning, but this usually settles within a short time.

Each time you move on to a new set of clear aligners, you may experience mild discomfort or pressure for a couple of days. This is actually a good sign, as it means your teeth are moving as they should.

Oral HygieneExtra Attention to Oral Hygiene Is Essential

Clear aligners are easier to keep clean than traditional fixed braces, but good oral hygiene is still extremely important. Wearing clear aligners over unclean teeth can trap food particles and bacteria against the tooth surface, increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

We recommend brushing your teeth after every meal before putting your aligners back in, as well as cleaning interdentally at least once a day. Taking a little extra care will help keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout your treatment.

Dental AppointmentsFewer and Shorter Dental Appointments

One of the big advantages of clear aligners is convenience. Unlike fixed braces, clear aligners don’t damage your gums, fall off, or break, so unexpected dental visits are very unlikely. You’ll usually need to attend short check‑up appointments every 4–6 weeks, allowing your dentist to monitor your progress and provide your next set of aligners.

Clear BracesClear Braces Aren’t the Only Option

Clear aligners are a fantastic solution for many people, but they’re not suitable for every type of teeth straightening issue. Your dentist will assess your teeth and recommend the most appropriate treatment for your individual needs.

If clear aligners aren’t right for you, please don’t be disappointed. There are always alternative options available, and your dentist will work with you to find a solution that helps you achieve the smile you’re looking for.
